My New Freelance Life Explained

From my seat in Kennebunkport Maine, I have complicated but interesting new relationships with Fiver and Upwork. I am a writer. And most recently, a freelance writer. I’ll spare you the gory details of how a professional with a doctorate in education and a successful career, decided she wanted to freelance. I think the reasons one turns to freelance are less important than the challenging freelance game itself. Some want to travel, others want to supplement their income, but for whatever reason, we end up searching the internet, late at night, for answers to complicated questions like, “Can I REALLY make money from freelancing?”

I believe the answer is “yes,” or frankly I wouldn’t be doing it.

Ways to begin a freelance writing side-hustle (or full-time income):

  1. Go solo. Create a simple website or add freelance gigs to your exisiting website. Make a quick business card on VistaPrint, and spread the word. The old fashioned way. Word of mouth, social media, exisiting business and neighborly contacts. Honestly, this is how I saw my freelance career starting. I know lots of people who could use a freelance writer in some capacity or another. And I think if you are a creative, industrious, and an outgoing human, this could certainly work…
